Issue 003: On Intimacy

Issue 003 expands the definition of intimacy, and explores how intersecting identities shape the way we experience intimacy in our lives.

We’re interested in exploring:

  • How you define and express intimacy

  • How you experience intimacy across various relationships -- romantic, platonic, familial and self

  • The relationship between intimacy and sexual expression

  • The ways in which intimacy brings you joy and fulfillment

  • What it means for you to feel safe to share intimacy with another person

  • How intimacy has been a site of trauma in your life

  • The commodification of intimacy

  • The role culture, faith, sexuality, gender expression, ethnicity, ability, physicality, etc. play in your experience with and expression of intimacy

Submission guidelines for Issue 003 are below.

  • Please submit all work by 11:59PM PST on May 17th, 2019 [submissions are now closed].

  • We are open to all submissions, but the work of women of color will be prioritized in the selection process

  • If your submission is accepted for publication, we ask that you help us publicize the release of Issue 003 in fall 2019 on your social media and in general!

  • By submitting, you agree to grant Undertone Collective First North American Serial Rights (FNASR) for your work should it be accepted for publication. Please read more about FNASR here:

  • Undertone Mag is curated and produced by creatives of color on volunteer time. While we are working towards gaining enough financial sustainability to pay our contributors, we unfortunately can't pay for your submission for this issue. However, if your submission is accepted, we will make sure that you get your copy free of charge. In addition, by submitting your work, you will be added to the Collective's network of creatives across the country.
